President and Chief Operating Officer, The MONY Group Inc.Samuel J. Foti, CLU, is President and Chief Operating Officer of The MONY Group Inc. (NYSE: MNY), a financial services holding company that provides a wide range of protection, asset accumulation and retail brokerage products and services through its member companies.

As President and Chief Operating Officer, Foti has responsibility for operational functions within The MONY Group as well as the finance and sales functions. In addition, non-insurance subsidiaries including Enterprise Capital Management and MONY's international subsidiaries report to him. He executed plans to diversify and expand the company's distribution channels, expanding beyond the career agency system to include avenues such as the Internet. 

Key Accomplishments
Throughout his tenure at MONY, Foti has been the strategic driving force behind a number of initiatives that have redefined the company and improved its financial standing in the eyes of industry rating agencies. Here is a short list of some of his more notable accomplishments: 

  • Foti played a key role in the company's demutualization, a process that allows a privately-held mutual life insurance company to become a publicly-owned firm. This strategy has been embraced by other insurance companies in the industry.    
  • He expanded the company's product line, services and revenue generation possibilities by, among other things, orchestrating the acquisition of U.S. Financial Life Insurance Co. and Trusted Advisors Inc.    
  • Foti implemented significant revenue savings initiatives, including an early retirement program and the reduction of sales force-related costs.    
  • He oversaw the creation and expansion of the company's Enterprise Strategies group, enabling the company to distribute through wholesalers and transition MONY's distribution network.    
  • Foti spearheaded the company's Internet/Intranet (Web) and Information Technology (IT) strategies, all of which have been lauded by industry technology leaders, industry groups and publications.    
  • He executed on plans to diversify and expand the company's distribution channels, expanding beyond the career agency system to include avenues such as the Internet.    
  • Foti led the company's efforts to tier, or segment, its career agency system, a move that has been emulated by other companies in the financial services industry.    
  • He repositioned the company's product mix by increasing the focus on the accumulation business, growing the number of Million Dollar Round Table sales force qualifiers and improving the quality of the sales force by enhancing their training and resources.    
  • Foti implemented a strategy to reposition the company's investment portfolio by reducing its exposure to mortgage loans and upgrading management of the equity real estate portfolio.    
  • He helped refocus the company by selling off several subsidiaries and divisions that were not essential to its core businesses.

Foti joined MONY in 1988 as the National Director of Agency Operations. He was promoted to Executive Vice President, Insurance Operations in 1991, a position he held until he was named President and Chief Operating Officer in 1994. Before joining MONY, Foti worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. At Metropolitan he held a variety of positions from 1974 to 1982 and served as a Vice President from 1983 to 1988. 

Foti's past and present directorships include The MONY Group Inc., MONY Life Insurance Company of America, MONY Bank & Trust Company of the Americas, Ltd., Life Insurance Marketing and Research Association (LIMRA), The Enterprise Group of Funds, and The American College. In addition, he has been a Chartered Life Underwriter since 1977. 

Graduating in 1974 from Wharton School of Business, Foti read law at the University of Oxford for one year and received his masters from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, majoring in Finance and Investments.
